EGOLI - My South African Home Movie
Germany 1996 | 90 Min. | 16 mm, OmeU
This documentary looks at the situation of both the homeless & the houseless communities in South Africa today and the extent to which these constituencies of marginalised people are organizing to help themselves. The circumstances and concerns of residents neighbouring homeless communities are reflected and the vision for the rehabilitation of the Johannesburg inner city in the context of providing for the homeless and rebuilding community life is explored. Efforts by individuals and communities to build houses in spite of frustrations experienced with the government housing subsidy process and the slow delivery of housing to the poorest of the poor, are explored by way of example in Oukasie, Molteno and the Eastern Cape rural region of Thornhill.
