Home to five different clans, the Wet’suwet’en territory in western Canada covers an area of 22,000 km². This land has always been unceded. Only the chiefs of the five clans can decide what happens within it. Yet, despite this, the Canadian government has approved the construction of multiple pipelines through the Wet’suwet’en territory.
Led by two strong women, Freda Huson and Molly Wickham, a steadily growing movement is standing in resistance, confronting oil workers, government officials and the police. The film YINTAH (‘land’) follows this struggle over more than a decade, becoming a testament of unwavering resistance against the oppressive policies of the state and the oil industry.
Michael Toledano is an award-winning filmmaker and journalist based in British Columbia Canada, who has been documenting the historic, Indigenous-led resistance to fossil fuel pipelines on Wet’suwet’en territory since 2014.
