Documentary film making in Kenya & Pakistan

- How to start and where to go to

Paneldiscussion with Judy Kibinge, Docubox (Nairobi) & Haya Fatima Iqbal, Documentary Association Pakistan (Karachi)

The two highly acclaimed filmmakers and producers discuss the backgrounds and contexts of documentary filmmaking in their countries. Their conversation will cover the training and qualification of filmmakers, the possibilities and demandings of financing as well as the part of the audiences one is producing a film for.

Judy Kibinge left a career in advertising to write and direct both fiction and documentary films. Her film Dangerous Affair (2002) is credited by many as the catalysis of contemporary filmmaking in Kenya. In 2013, she founded DOCUBOX to support independent East African filmmakers with grants, labs and screenings.

Haya Fatima Iqbal is an Academy and two-time Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker based in Pakistan. She is Co-Founder of the Documentary Association of Pakistan (DAP), an initiative to promote the craft of documentary filmmaking in Pakistan through building community, providing mentorship, and deepening networks between Pakistani doc filmmakers and film markets.
