Daria Zhuravel

The deeply personal auto-ethnographic work by Ukrainian filmmaker Daria Zhuravel engages the observer with the limitations of humanness, its inability to direct time, and the ultimate inevitability of death. Through what she calls a collage film, Daria intuitively layers fragments of words, children’s paintings, photos and videos, as they seem to flee and escape from her, and so does she. She explores the meaning of impermanence of life and memory, reflecting on loss and the traces that we leave behind.

Daria Zhuravel, born in Odesa, graduated with a BA in Acting from the Kyiv National University of Theatre, Film and Television. In 2022, during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, she created her first documentary short film POSTCARD. Currently based in Kyiv, she is developing a feature documentary project about Ukrainian youth and a short fiction film, while also working as a director’s assistant.
