I<\/span><\/strong>n these times of rad\u00adi\u00adcal uncer\u00adtain\u00adty and crisis, we at the FREIBURGER<\/span> FILMFORUM-<\/span> FESTIVAL<\/span> OF<\/span> TRANSCULTURAL<\/span> CINEMA<\/span>, togeth\u00ader with Emer\u00adgent Futures CoLab, are explor\u00ading ways in which film and mul\u00adti\u00admodal projects might pro\u00advide us with oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties to inter\u00advene, pro\u00advoke and\/or col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrate around imag\u00adin\u00ading and per\u00adform\u00ading new futures. <\/span><\/p>\n

F<\/span><\/strong>or our 20th fes\u00adti\u00adval edi\u00adtion (May 11- May 21, 2023), we will bring you an excit\u00ading line-up of films and mul\u00adti\u00admodal out\u00adputs which ques\u00adtion our under\u00adstand\u00ading of time, linear sto\u00adry\u00adtelling, col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion and activism in a forum setup. These works will be screened in a spe\u00adcial pro\u00adgram accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by a panel dis\u00adcus\u00adsion titled \u201cFilm, Mul\u00adti\u00admodal\u00adi\u00adty and Future-making Method\u00adolo\u00adgies\u201d. Film\u00admak\u00aders, artists and researchers who deal with nar\u00adra\u00adtives, imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtions and visions of future(s) - includ\u00ading those beyond visual anthro\u00adpol\u00ado\u00adgy and aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic cir\u00adcles - are invit\u00aded to apply.<\/span><\/p>\n

Call for Films<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

F<\/span><\/strong>ilm\u00admak\u00aders, artists and researchers have recent\u00adly been explor\u00ading how \u201cpre\u00adferred\u201d futures might emerge through the col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive micro-polit\u00adi\u00adcal process\u00ades that account for sen\u00adso\u00adry expe\u00adri\u00adence - e.g., imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, hope and antic\u00adi\u00adpa\u00adtion - which are inscribed in the uncer\u00adtain\u00adty of the present (Salazar, Pink and Sj\u00f6berg 2017; Cul\u00adhane and Elliott 2017). For this spe\u00adcial pro\u00adgram, we are seek\u00ading films and other audio, visual and dig\u00adi\u00adtal out\u00adputs where par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpants col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrate to imag\u00adine, per\u00adform and\/or film their imag\u00adined futures through artis\u00adtic prac\u00adtices such as impro\u00advi\u00adsa\u00adtion. We believe that such film\u00admak\u00ading and mul\u00adti\u00admodal method\u00adolo\u00adgies might allow us to try out dif\u00adfer\u00adent future sce\u00adnar\u00adios, nav\u00adi\u00adgat\u00ading the pos\u00adsi\u00adble and impos\u00adsi\u00adble (Cubero &<\/span> Sj\u00f6berg 2021<\/a>), espe\u00adcial\u00adly as we face all sorts of rising threats: the COVID-19<\/span> pan\u00addem\u00adic, ultra\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adism, fas\u00adcism, cli\u00admate geno\u00adcide, dig\u00adi\u00adtal colo\u00adnial\u00adism, etc. (Kazubows\u00adki-Hous\u00adton and Nayyar 2021).<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span><\/strong>e are look\u00ading for works which explore tem\u00adpo\u00adral\u00adi\u00adty, utopia\/dystopia, and alter\u00adna\u00adtive futures using dis\u00adtinct meth\u00adods of sto\u00adry\u00adtelling, includ\u00ading, but not lim\u00adit\u00aded to, Eth\u00adnofic\u00adtion, (social) sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion or immer\u00adsive meth\u00adods (Vir\u00adtu\u00adal Real\u00adi\u00adty \/ Aug\u00adment\u00aded Real\u00adi\u00adty \/ 360 \/ iDocs). How can such meth\u00adods help to create what visual anthro\u00adpol\u00ado\u00adgist Johannes Sj\u00f6berg calls \u201ctem\u00adpo\u00adral prox\u00adim\u00adi\u00adty\u201d (Cubero &<\/span> Sj\u00f6berg 2021<\/a>), where\u00adby the \u201cfar-away\u201d is linked to the \u201chere &<\/span> now\u201d, making the future tan\u00adgi\u00adble and thus prompt\u00ading us to act? Film\u00admak\u00ading and mul\u00adti\u00admodal meth\u00adods are not col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive by default, and col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion often involves nego\u00adti\u00adat\u00ading vary\u00ading inter\u00adests and con\u00adflict\u00ading agen\u00addas (Nayyar &<\/span> Kazubows\u00adki-Hous\u00adton 2020). <\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span><\/strong>here\u00adfore, in this kind of work, a high level of trust and will\u00ading\u00adness to exper\u00adi\u00adment and impro\u00advise must exist between the col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtors, to ensure that the output does not end up being a total\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan act by the filmmaker\/artist\/researcher. As such, we invite films and works of col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtive art which speak to the fric\u00adtions of nego\u00adti\u00ada\u00adtion, reveal con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adto\u00adry and con\u00adtentious nar\u00adra\u00adtives, and make these process\u00ades trans\u00adpar\u00adent. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, we wel\u00adcome sub\u00admis\u00adsions that chal\u00adlenge us to decol\u00ado\u00adnize our rela\u00adtion\u00adship to time in the con\u00adtext of cer\u00adtain power struc\u00adtures, for instance, in the case of activist approach\u00ades like Afro-, Indige\u00adnous, and queer\u00adfem\u00adi\u00adnist futurisms. <\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span><\/strong>e are excit\u00aded to receive films and mul\u00adti\u00admodal out\u00adputs that high\u00adlight how col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtors are crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly ges\u00adtur\u00ading towards decol\u00ado\u00adniz\u00ading imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion in their work on spec\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtive futures. How can we imag\u00adine dif\u00adfer\u00adent\u00adly and co-create films or mul\u00adti\u00admodal out\u00adputs that chal\u00adlenge nar\u00adra\u00adtives of the future pro\u00adduced by cap\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adist and xeno\u00adpho\u00adbic media ecolo\u00adgies? How can we create a space where dream\u00ading and envi\u00adsion\u00ading the future iter\u00ada\u00adtions of \u201cthe good life\u201d move beyond pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnant neo-cap\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adist nar\u00adra\u00adtives? How do ethno\/social sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion films chal\u00adlenge our notion of tem\u00adpo\u00adral\u00adi\u00adty? How might par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00ading in such projects create a space for activism, heal\u00ading, and spec\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading futures? How are expe\u00adri\u00adences of the past reflect\u00aded in the way one imag\u00adines the future?<\/span><\/p>\n
