They are called “nobodies”, Spanish “nadie”: migrants that cross Mexico on their way to the United States. They travel without papers in order to avoid being sent back when stopped by the police. On the quest for a better life Maria Ponce also leaves her family in Honduras. Her journey through Mexico turns into a nightmare: After three days, Maria’s group is attacked; Maria is raped repeatedly and some of her friends are gravely maltreated. For two and a half years young Mexican director Tin Dirdamal accompanied migrants from Central America on their journeys through Mexico to the US. Most of them never reach the US border. Many fail in the light of violence and criminal gangs that have specialized in attacks on migrants. The result is an impressive first film that has received numerous awards.
