Every second year since 1985 the freiburger film forum is offering an opportunity to see films from and about Africa, America, Asia and Ozeania and for discussions with filmmakers. In Freiburg not only documentary filmmakers and filming anthropologists are meeting eachother, there is also a dialogue between authors of the "Cinéma du Sud" and visual anthropologists going on.

The freiburger film forum doesn't give any prizes. The filmprogram is organized in the frame of focal themes and topics and in addition there is time for many discussions and panels.

Topics 1999

• Retrospective Dennis O'Rourke : Since 1975 the australian documentary filmmaker ( CANNIBAL TOURS, HALF LIFE, THE GOOD WOMAN OF BANGKOK eg) has been reflecting on social and ethnographic topics: Papua-New Guinea, Marshall-Islands, Thailand etc.
• Latino Cinema in the USA . Since the sixties there is a chicano cinema by mexican-american authors as well as films by americans of caribean origin. Both documentaries and "Hispanic Hollywood" films focus on the (self) representation of latino culture and the topic of "crossing borders".
• Israel, a nation of immigration. Documentaries on Israeli citizens with different cultural and religious backgrounds: Sephardim, Ashkenasim, Falashas, muslim and christian Palestinians.
• Westafrica: reactions to social changes
• Hommage to Djibril Diop Mambéty , the pioneer of senegalese cinematography (TOUKO BOUKI, HYÈNES, LA FRANC, etc.) who died in 1998.
• New ethnofilms from Brasil presented by Paula Morgada, São Paulo
• Family biographies in documentaries
• New ethnographic films
• New films from and about Africa, America, Asia and Oceania.

III.Visual Anthropology Workshop

FILM IN CULTURE - CULTURE IN FILM:
Visual Anthropology and Nonethnographic Films.

For the third time (after 1995 and 1997) there will be a workshop on a relevant topic in Visual Anthropology during the freiburger film forum. In the past anthropologists have left nonethnographic films to the scientific reception of media and communication studies. This year's workshop aims at filling this gap at least partly. Ana Lopez (New Orleans), Eveline Dürr (Freiburg) and invited filmmakers will discuss isssues related to the reception of nonethnographic films by visual anthropologists, focusing on Latino Cinema (see topics 99). The discussions will be mediated by Barbara Lüem (Basel).

The workshop invites the participation of anthropology students. Presentations and discussions will be in English.

As the number of participants is restricted , we ask for registration before April 21. The fee of DM 40.- includes the workshop documentation, lunch and intitles to a free catalogue as well as a reduction to the week-ticket for the freiburger film forum.
